But with expanding Media Collections, Comes New Challenges for Organizing them, Having their Meta Data and Of Course sharing them Across Users and Devices, in your own home and to outside world,
There are many stand alone alternative from Operating system developers, For Windows there is Windows Media Center and For OSx there is iTunes, However for Organizing or Sharing media Both of them seesm to be developed Half Heartedly and has many limitations, there are few other options optimized for Personal Computing Like VLC and Quick time, But they are Both Players and Falls Short of Becoming Media Center,
Lets Define Media Center Here, A typical and Holistic Media Center should have capablities of Recoding your TV, Organizing Remaning Your Medias, Ripping your Medial Collection from Blu Ray, DVD, Sharing those media, to other users, and playing them across devices and users, whether in your network or outside your home network,
Since i believe in open source software development, i have decided to ignore above mentioned media Centers from Microsoft and Apple and Other sources, and rather chose two open source Medial Centers, Plex and Kodi ( Earlier Known As XBMC),

Major Advantage of Plex is its Sever Architecture which allows Plex Users, to Transcode Media according to requirement of Different Devices, and streaming them across Users,
Plex Pass is additional feature which is chargeable for 100 USD for Life time which ensures additional features, but it is not necessary for basic operation,

Kodi However offers More Customization and Much Large Open Source Plugins For Customization, which make it perfect solution for Advanced user,
